Back to the drawing board

I’ve backed out the character encoding fixes. Not only were they not working properly in Internet Explorer, but they were causing some sites to hang again. I’ve got a new version that I’m testing that may work, but at this point I’m begining to think programming unicode is more like voodoo than software.
